Hey guys - what time frame would the guys in 1st Cav start wearing black/OD divisional patches verses the gold/black?
was it operational? when they went out in the boonies they would have jungle fatigues with subdued insignia? but garrison or summer Khakis would be the full color Division patch?
I was thinking it a s time frame thing..... 1965-67 color 67- end of war was issued subdued patches...... comments? corrections? any info? thanks- Steve

I'd have to and look through notes, but I have found that it is easier to break the subdued vs unsubdued patch issue by uniform The sateens are non subdued First jungles I'd say non subdued but could have been changed later in the war Second jungles more of a chance of getting subdued Third pattern all subdued with the exception of unit patches on some I have seen also this is where pin on rank is seen most often
That's just off the top of my head I would have to go through my notes to find dates. If memory serves Trey moored site has great info on this as well.

Hi, guys. Maybe this can help you: "... the Cav would deploy and fight initially with what they had on its back. So the division headquarters passed out an order: dye all uniforms, underwear, and handkerchiefs a dark green.. [...] The division ordered the Cav patches cut off, although not everyone got the word. General Knowles recalls having seen troopers on the trains leaving Fort Benning wearing not only Cav patches, but also the patches of the 11th Air Assault Division. Those who dyed their fatigues with the patches still attached ended with green-and-black patches. That [...] gave some folks at the division a bright idea: manufacturing black-and-green patches along with rank and branch insignia. [...] Kinnard ordered a better brand from a Japanese manufacturer and had them issued shortly after the division arrived in Vietnam. The trend swept the division like wildfire, eventually spreading to other units in Vietnam and, ultimately, to the entire Army."From "PLEIKU_ The dawn of helicopter warfare", pg. 38, St, Martin's Press, New York written in 1988 by former Colonel J. D. Coleman who was the author of the Ia Drang Campaing AAR. As you can see, Black-And-Green patches were in Vietnam in 1965 when the division arrived to An Khe, and the Air Cav was the pioneer unit in the Army wearing these subdued patches. Best regards.

Greetings - I was an OH13 & LOH scout crew chief / door gunner and an infantry Blue RTO in Charlie Troop 1st Squadron 9th Cavalry regiment 1968-69, my first tour was with 15 TC Bn 1967-68.
About the subdued Cav patches, I knew people who arrived from the "world" with yellow ones. One solution we had was to mark out the yellow areas with black magic marker pens until we were able to obtain green ones in country. When we flew in Charlie Troop 1/9 we used to wear our rank on collar pins.
You have a well done site and group, thank you for honoring us! CavScout68
