When I was in country 69-70 both cotton M14 and the new nylon M16 sling was available.The hasty sling is a good sling but the metal hardware is noisy when hooked Thur the front sight and at the butt stock wrist, so you can Carry the rifle at the horizontal at waist level. As an alternative we tied two black shoe laces together with blood knots (fishing knot)and used them in place of conventional slings. When wearing your flack jacket they do not cut into the top of your shoulder.
