One essential piece of equipment carried by most grunts was the church key, the old sheet metal can/bottle opener from the prepulltop days. Not only would it open a can of beer or soda but it was used to punch holes in the sides of c ration cans(at the bottom)to made the into stoves for eather heat tabs or C4 for heating. The key was usually suspended from a round shoe lace hung around the neck.A field soldier, often preferred a winding can opener to the P38 which is slow.
