Gents,
Our unit, 101st LRRPs, is offering a Recondo-style course for US impression Vietnam reenactors. This event will be run with the support of the VA-Carolina Military History Association, Inc. We have made initial inquiries to Donnie about using the Enfield site and he and the landowner are open to it.
The concept for the course is this:
1. Built around the Sept 2014 Enfield Vietnam tactical
2. Training begins promptly on Thursday morning on the Enfield site (this means Wed arrival)
3. Course cost between $15-$20 a head (in addition to the $15 Enfield event fee)
4. Training goes all day Thurs and half day Fri...tactical events (Fri evening and all day Saturday) are essentially the 'graduation exercises'
5. It will be full immersion from start to finish
6. Limited to male reenactors, 18 or older, US impressions only
Topics to be covered during the training:
Patrol Preparation - includes 5 paragraph OPORDS, sand tables, troop leading procedures / patrol base operations
Movement Skills – moving tactically
Immediate Action Drills - reaction to an ambush and breaking contact
Conduct of a Patrol – includes passage of lines, crossing danger areas
Hand and Arm Signals
RTO Procedures
Conducting an Ambush (hasty or deliberate to include linear and L shaped)
Roles and duties of each team member to include pointman, tail gunner, RTO, TL and ATL
Basic Fieldcraft to include stealth and camouflage
Correct care and wear of field gear to include the packing of rucksacks
Period Life (music, slang, magazines, etc)
Post-mission operations
We will initially have two primary instructors:
1. Retired US Army LTC, Ranger School grad, Panama (combat jump) and Desert Storm (both with 82nd), plus time with SOCOM
2. Retired Marine Gunny, Iraq and Afghan experience, plus served 2.5 years in a Force Recon unit
In addition to our own experience, we have also been getting instructions and advice from Vietnam-era LRRP/Ranger and MACV SOG veterans to improve the accuracy of the training.
Obviously for the guys with military experience, some of this will be old hat, BUT keep in mind that the training will be geared towards period-correct Vietnam methods and standards.
For newer units, this is a chance to get some quality training.
So for $30-$35 total, you'll be getting 3 weeks of Vietnam focused training packed into roughly 3.5 days, only without the harassment and PT.
So if you have any interest, please send me an email at ssgtmooch@aol.com.
Regards,
Mooch
PS Please feel free to socialize this with other Vietnam reenacting units if you have contact with them. We're hoping that this will help grow Vietnam reenacting in VA and NC.
