Thought I'd start this one as a similar thread exists on the WW2 forum. Me many moons ago, running tired.

Nice Kit there Oggy. Always wanted to give Aussies a go, but that's another story... Here's another, War and Peace arena display, mid 90s , I think. Me Left front duck hunter helmet cover. USMC.

Many thanks Mike - it's actually come a bit further since then - I have the full Sleeping System, every bit of the webbing is Aussie now, I only need the boots... I understand where you're coming from with the kit tho - if it wasn't for my contacts in Aus, I wouldn't have gotten half the kit...

Ha ha! Thats funny. Its a small world! I recognise you now Mike. I think we chatted at W&P that year. I was also at Detling that year in my Class Bs in MP gear, your friend Peter harangued me about being a babykiller. I believe I drew my baton...

I do remember chatting with a couple of MPs on the way back to the RT display. Anna was with me, can't remember if she was wearing her Vietnam Nurses kit or not. Was a good chat as I remember. Will def visit if I get to Mayhem on the Sun.

me doin marines 2005 beltring jack Nice piccie Dallas. If you don't mind, Iwould like to use it to illustrate a point. Jack says he's doing Marines, but how would you know? Studying pictures of the time can give you some real clues as to what and how items were worn. No foliage/helmet band M1955 flak M1941 haversack (notice tan straps) K-Bar on belt M1942 first aid pouch on belt under right elbow Mitchell (leaf pattern) shelter half on haversack Most of these items are specific to the Marines and wouldn't have been used by the US Army

It's just a M16A1 ("Bird cage" flash hider, forward assist and other changes from the XM16-E1) which was issued to all US Military front line units, whether they be Army, Marines, Air Force or Navy. Hope that helps Nick.

Indirectly the Marines were responsible for some of the changes to the M16, story goes, when they were issued M16s there were few cleaning kist and it was assumed that the new technology didn't need cleaning...hence the initial stoppage issues. The use of a chromed barrel and chamber and new smokeless ammo went a long way towards improving the weapon...
